All about alternative music

Nirvana Mark Begelman BlogMany names signifying the same genre of music; Alternative music has many synonyms including alt rock,alternative rock or simply alternative.This style of music became extremely famous in 80s and 90s.This genre of music is very popular among the youth of today as the music is peppy with catchy lyrics.The term ‘alternative’ was coined due to the presence of the existing genres of music.Since this genre was quite different in terms of its music and its rendition from the ones existing during the 80s and early 90s, it was seen as an alternative to the existing heavy metal ballads etc.

Sub-genres and popular bands of this genre:

It is often a little difficult to describe this genre of music. In short the word ‘anti mainstream’ is a perfect adjective used for it.There are many sub-genres to the alternative music.There are subtle differences in them but all in all,they reflect similar style and hence are called alternative music.The sub genres are:

>> Brit Pop

>> Indy pop

>> Grunge

>> Gothic rock

>> College rock

The above mentioned kinds of music branch out from underground music which in turn is an offshoot of punk rock which was the craze in the mid 1980s.Some of the bands and groups that have made this music extremely popular and have managed to attain commercial success, worldwide acclaim and international recognition are Nirvana,Radiohead, Muse,Jane’s Addiction and The Cure. Each of the above mentioned sub genres of this style of music have its own properties.Music fanatics who love this style can easily identify these differences but for the inexperienced,they all sound the same.These differences stem out from the beats per minute or use of heavy metal etc.

Characteristics of alternative music:

The characteristics of this music style can be known to those people who are familiar with the prevalent forms of music during its emergence. For the untrained ears,it is hard to comprehend the difference.However,here are a few of them:

>> The bands were localized and hence played at small clubs

>> The idea was to break through the popular cults of music

>> Heavy use of guitars with increased bpm or beats per minute Music fanatics who love this style can easily identify these differences but for the inexperienced,they all sound the same.These differences stem out from the beats per minute or use of heavy metal etc.

>> The lyrics are related to the issues of social concern such as drug abuse, rehabilitation etc

Denunciation of the commercial aspect of the conventional culture
